Call for Mentee!!

We’re offering an opportunity for you to become our Creative Blips Mentee - to grow as a creative and work on your own project with our guidance for 2 months usually! Interested? Keep reading!

How is THIS mentorship different from YOUR internship?

This program is focused only on your personal creative growth, rather than a “studio production experience”. Mentorship meetings will be held once a week for 60-90 minutes (which will include personalized lectures, feedback, and project review). Our mentorship program is also conducted entirely online at this time, unlike our internships which take place primarily in the studio.

You do not need to be a student or enrolled in school to apply. This is a free opportunity for you to develop your creative skills; you will not be working on anything other than your own project, which will remain 100% yours before, during, and after the Mentorship program.

What do you look for in a Mentee?

We look for strong-willed Mentees that are self-motivated and are willing to adapt in response to feedback. A mentorship only works if the Mentee does the assignments, so you must be able to put your own time into your project (about 6-8 hours a week). Our ideal Mentee will have a project they are excited to work on, and will be open to critique and feedback so that the project can really grow. While we’ll be putting our time and experience into your mentorship, at the end of the day, what you’re working on is your project. We won’t have any rights to or ownership of it, during or after your mentorship, or any obligation to it afterwards; it is and will be yours, no strings attached.

Who can apply?

  • Our Mentorship program is open to writers, creatives, and artists, as well as creative teams (3 members max). If you’re applying as a team, just apply ONCE as a group, not once for each team member. Please be aware that each person’s role in the project needs to be explained in the application form, individual contact information must be provided, and all forms requiring signatures must be signed by all team members.

  • You should be the SOLE owner of your proposed project (unless the project is based on a property in the public domain - for example, a version of the original Alice in Wonderland).

  • You can participate in our Mentorship program from any part of the world, as long as you have a strong internet connection that can support video chat! However, keep in mind that we are located in LA. We will accommodate you as much as we can, but your availability for meetings must fit into our schedule of 9am-6pm (Pacific Time).

  • Our program is open to all creatives 12 years old and up! However, if you are a minor (under 18 years of age), you must be at least 12 years old when the mentorship begins on September 1st, 2020. Minors will also need your parent or legal guardian’s consent to apply via this form. If you are a minor and this signed, completed form is not included with your application, you will not be considered.

    • While a Mentorship interview will be focused on you as an applicant and parents would not be participating in the Mentorship, as a minor your parent or guardian must be present at your interview, and be willing to supervise all online Mentorship Meetings unless they agree otherwise.

  • We are multilingual! English, Spanish or Catalan is great. You just need to know enough English to communicate with us through emails and the application itself.

What do I need to apply?

Unlike our internship, our mentorship requires a bit more work for the submission. Of course, you will need to submit your trusty resume and shiny portfolio or work samples, but also a Project Proposal that answers the following questions:

  • What kind of project are you planning on doing during your mentorship?

    • Explain in one line what form of media your project will be. It could be a comic, a character design portfolio, a pitch bible, etc. It’s up to you!

    • Reminder: DO NOT send us your actual pitch materials, pitch-related artwork, or any other pitch-related materials. We will not be able to look at or read it, which means we cannot consider your application.

  • What you would like to accomplish during this mentorship?

    • For example, going by what type of medium your project is in:

      • Comic:

        • “I want to finish 4 color comic pages.”

        • “I want to develop a comic pitch to send to a publisher.”

        • “I want to build a strong foundation and pipeline for publishing my own webcomic.”

      • Character design portfolio:

        • “I have this story (you need a complete story or a story to adapt, already chosen) so I want to create characters for it.”

      • Writing:

        • “I want to write a pitch bible for this story I have.”

        • “I want to write better character profiles for this story I have.”

        • “I want to develop strong episodes for this story I have.”

  • What is the genre and audience for your Project Proposal (if applicable)?

    • For example: Fantasy for kids 8-12, Preschool slice of life, Horror-Fantasy for older teens…

  • Why do you want to take this mentorship, and how do you think it might help you?

    • Please answer in 500 words or less.

  • Any other relevant details!

    • If this is a team project, this is the place for information about your individual roles and how the team will work. For all participants, please include your name, preferred language, and time zone/country (if not in Pacific Time).

  • If you are a Minor (under 18 years of age):

    • If you are 12-17 years old, you will need your parent or legal guardian’s consent to apply via this form. You must be at least 12 years old when the mentorship begins in September. If you are a minor and this completed consent form is not included with your application, you will not be considered.

Do’s and Don’ts:

  • Do submit your cover letter, resume, portfolio (if applicable), relevant work samples, and Project Proposal.

  • Do send all documents as a PDF.

    • If a file is too large to attach, please send a link directly to it (such as a Drive or Dropbox file, not an entire website, please.)

  • Do include your name and email address in each document.

  • Do limit your resume and Project Proposal to 1 page maximum each.

  • Don’t worry about having a story title for your Project Proposal - it’s likely to change!

  • Do NOT attach any additional support material for your Project Proposal

    • No drawings, no scripts, nothing. Just answer the questions above in your project proposal. If you have posted story-related material for public viewing online, just add the link to it. Again, DO NOT send us your actual pitch or pitch-related creative materials. We will not be able to look at or read it, which means we cannot consider your application.
